The Heron Observation Network consists of over 60 volunteers who have adopted wading bird colonies throughout Maine. Volunteers observe their colony at least once during the breeding season to report whether or not the colony is active that year. Those who have more time to contribute can observe colonies every few weeks, revealing important information about the breeding success of the colony. There are many colonies in the state that have not yet been “adopted,” so we are always looking for more volunteers. If you are interested in adopting a colony, or want to find out more, please email us.
